LEHDER's Award-Winning CANstruction Entry

LEHDER's Sarnia CANstruction 2016 Entry

The LEHDER CANstruction Team is extremely honoured to have participated in the 2016 Sarnia CANstruction event which benefits The Inn of the Good Shepherd, a vital service in our community.  The 14 teams participating this year spent most of the day Saturday, March 5, raising our structures at Lambton Mall with hopes of beating the annual totals from the previous year.  Last year with CANstruction 2015, our small community placed:

  • 2nd in Canada and 18th in the world for volume of food raised; and
  • 1st in Canada and 2nd in the world for food and funds raised!

A theme was provided to the teams this year, and while not a mandatory requirement, the LEHDER team wanted to construct a structure based upon the 'Famous Landmarks from Around the World' theme.  Thus, the idea for the Leaning Tower of "Pizza" came to be.  However, we wanted it to lean like the actual Tower of Pisa does so our design team set to work on that difficult task.  After weeks of design, sourcing of food items and pre-building our structure, we were confident we could safely build the tower to obtain the visual effect we wanted.

The award ceremony was held Sunday, March 6, after the team of judges had an opportunity to view all the completed structures.  Pictures of all the structures entered this year and the full awards list can be located on the Sarnia CANstruction 2016 Facebook page. The LEHDER team was honoured to place:

1st - Best Meal

1st - Best Use of Theme

2nd - Judges' Favourite

3rd - Best Use of Labels

3rd - People's Choice (monies raised through public donations at the structure)

We would also like to thank our sponsors:

Bright's Grove Foodland - providing us discounts and donations of the food items we needed for our structure.

DMI Property Management - donating a parking pass to the LEHDER Point Edward office for a staff raffle.

The Saucy Pig - providing LEHDER with an excellent BBQ lunch as an internal fundraiser.

LEHDER Point Edward staff - their generosity during our fundraising efforts raised over $600 for The Inn.

The support of our community is amazing, and we are so proud to be a part of this fantastic event.  Thanks again to the team at The Inn for their tireless work in organizing this event each year, and to Lorraine Kraayenbrink Photography for providing us this great image of our structure. We're already looking forward to next year's event!

Sarnia CANstruction 2016

     Posted by LEHDER News on

LEHDER's CANstruction team is busily preparing our structure for our second annual submission to The Inn of the Good Shepherd's CANstruction event.  We're very honoured to have the 'LEHDER Bee' from our 'Hunger Stings' structure from CANstruction 2015 used as the image to promote this year's event!

The teams have been given a theme of 'World Famous Landmarks' and we feel we have risen to that challenge with our design this year.  The structures will be built Saturday, March 5 at the Lambton Mall and the event will run until March 22.  Each structure will have a repository for placing monetary donations - so make sure to come out and "vote" for your favourite structure!  All food and monies raised will directly benefit this integral service to our community.

At the 2015 event, the Sarnia CANstruction displays raised over $30,000 and 40,000 lbs of food for The Inn, placing Sarnia as:

  • 2nd in Canada and 18th in the world for volume of food raised; and
  • 1st in Canada and 2nd in the world for food and funds raised!

It amazes us how supportive and giving our community is, and we're honoured to be a part of this great event.  We hope to see you there!
